Visually Impaired Trainees from the Forest of Dean "Forge Centre" have special 'closed' sessions so that there is less risk to the Trainees - some of whom are totally blind. Machines are adapted safely to allow them access to appropriate exercise. Their ability to adapt and perform exercise techniques is truly amazing.
So, here, in the Fitness Centre, Sighted Guides ensure safe training and all Instructors are specially trained to ensure that all Fitness Sessions and all Exercises are safe for all users. This empowers any Trainee with a special requirement or need to do things that he or she otherwise could not do.
Things sighted people take for granted take on a different significance for blind people. Here, for instance, Balancing exercises when you cannot see are difficult but, more importantly, essential. Notice the Sighted Guide in attendance to ensure that it is all done safely.
A Special Need that is being shown here is the requirement to 'Talk & Touch' - If you cannot see the equipment to have it described is good but to be able to touch it and feel what this bit does and that lever is essential. But it all has to be in a safe environment. The Instructors and Sighted Guides are on the alert all the time for any potential hazard.
Friendship and Social inter-action is essential - more so for Visually Impaired People who rely mainly on the spoken word.
End of Session "Warm Down" always includes good stretching exercises which help to relieve tension.
